February 7th 2025 - Carl Freidrik Window display
The floor of the window sits at hip height, a considerable jump up from the street level. It's almost impossible to avoid these monolithic attempts at elevation, and even harder to be asked not to spit at the ground in disgust. Aside from being boring, uninspiring and an eyesore my main problems with this display is the obscene flaunting of wealth/power.
The selection of suitcases and handbag varieties are elevated again with these three wooden plinths, hard brown wood. The scene set with ghostly white curtain backgrounds, ( this backdrop i am not totally against, it invokes an upper-class memory of the home with lofty ceiling space and openness, plenty of room to breathe and decorate.)
My Neck Cranes again as i double take at the misguided Window. It can not be any form of oversight to have these bags shown at this comical height, you are not asked to engage inspect or interact with the product in any meaningful way. It sits above me laughing
Fortnum & Masons Spring display
Alluring, Charming and delightfully seasonal
Fortnum & Masons Spring season window displays have singlehandedly reinstated and set the bar for what a window display can and does do.
Its all about spring, Fortnum's upper middle class shoppers and the tourists of Piccadilly are reminded/transported to the grandeur of the English countryside, Flowers bloom in abundance in scenes reminiscent of a sprawling Van Gogh scene. Instead of products being shoved into your face you are invited to the setting of the picnic , the shooting range, the river amongst the fields and reminded that it is a hamper from Fortnum that is the appropriate accompaniment to these occasions,
I especially appreciate how the sets reinforce the pre existing Alcoves along the shopfront defining the separate displays, framed in white this seasons work boast exquisite use of perspective stretching these landscapes into infinity. Or asking the minds eye and pedestrians bodys into the vanishing point of these sets behind the walls and into the interior of the shop.
Totally Peverse Window display
Fortnum and Masons Trademarked 'Eau de Nil'
Tiffanys Blue ( Close but no cigar )
The most illicit branding in these displays are quite non offensive, its the repeated use of Fortnum and Masons trademarked blue ' Eau de Nil' translating to ' the water of the nile ' a comically haughty title but an agreeable shade, The blue takes the form of a vintage plane , shooting range huts, and a picnic bench.
Totally earnest, Home-made , a glittering example of what Art can be
